Our Mission

The Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff and ECC 9/11 Memorial Race was born from an idea to start a road race after two Arlington County Police Officers had returned from a similar road race in Buffalo, New York. The first Arlington 9/11 Race was held on September 7, 2002, with 2600 runners, and raised approximately $40,000.

Since its inception, the Arlington Police, Fire, Sheriff and ECC 9/11 Memorial Race has had over 40,000 runners cross its finish line and has raised over $950,000 for 9/11-related charities. Our goal for the 2024 race is to take us over ONE MILLION DOLLARS.

We are members of Arlington County Public Safety, that volunteer our time to manage this race. We are not professional event planners and we always welcome feedback.

David Paranteau is a graphic designer and creator of the "9/11 Remember symbol" that we have used since 2002. David offers the following explanation of his symbol:

  • The black signifies the grief and loss of our nation (The Pentagon, the date, and the WTC towers in place of the number 11 in the date).

  • The white background represents hope of freedom, peace, and healing.

  • REMEMBER that freedom is worth preserving and that it has never been won without loss. We remember our friends, our co-workers, spouses, rescuers, children, business partners, military and government officials, visitors to New York and our nation. We will never forget our fallen heroes.

  • The flag is our national emblem and represents the highest ideals of individual liberty, justice, and equal opportunity for all. These ideals will help our nation cope with this tragedy.
